  1. Teach the importance of communal food preparation and consumption while also ensuring everyone understands why we are not to use styrofoam plates? It seems almost easier to organize the recent-immigrant community, but many – coming from LDCs – ignore the ecological damage wrought by over-consumptive urbanization. For the first generation, community bonds are tight and money is tighter leading to the success of ideas like community kitchens. What happens when community members begin to increase their wealth (or the wrecking ball of gentrification hits)? Do they stay and invest further in communal assets while raising consciousness about the need for ecologically sensitive urban settlements? Or do they move out to the suburbs in their SUV just like the rest of us?
My skepticism is only skin deep. There must be a way to instill lasting values of community and “enoughness”, even here in the heart of consumer capitalism.
